Phil and Dylan in "The biggest little city on earth" ! I took my 6 yr old daughter to the show for our first concert together. Dylan opened and played a great up tempo set. Jasmine spent the entire set on my shoulders while I swayed to the music. Then it was time for Phil & Friends, I had really been hoping to catch my first Phil show when he had Jimmy and Warren on board , but how could I really complain with Robin Ford, Billy Payne and Paul Barrere in the line up ? My daughter slipped off to sleep during the opening jam and we moved up into the bleachers, where she slept the whole set away curled up in my lap. So I didn't get to dance to what proved to be a rockin' show. The Uncle John's was hot,the first lead break was jammed out a little faster and jazzier than I've heard before, probably Robin driving that one. On the flip side the closing jam was more along the traditional line yet a little punchier. It was a very nice contrast in style between the guitar players. They took this energy into a rollicking Dixie Chicken>Tennesee Jed . This combination really worked out well, and of course the slot machine reference during the Jed wasn't lost on the crowd at the Hilton that night. They really captured that Little Feat groove here, that bizzare country/funk/boogie mix that always made Feat shows so much fun. Now I've seen a number of shows outdoors at the Hilton, and calling it an Amphitheatre is being kind, it's a converted parking lot with bleachers and a stage whose backdrop is the runway of the Reno airport, so I was surprised that they didn't play Oh Atlanta with it's airport reference with the planes taking off and landing behind the band. Instead they close out the set with a bouncy Scarlet Begonias, followed by my favorite encore.... Brokedown Palace. A wonderful end to a show that for me carries very fond memories. Thanks for giving me the chance to hear it again.
